Caught price hiking & suggesting replacing parts that aren't worn out ? I believe people should have a loud warning about such things. Just keeping the mechanic stereotypes going. I'm looking at a ridiculous part price quote on an invoice sent to a family member. $97.99 for a common GM serpentine belt. That doesn't include installation! The rest of the labor, shop supplies(why?) & tax kicks the quote to over $180! Shops get way better pricing than the public for their part orders. The EXACT same belt brand & part number is $20 through Walmart, $30 through Amazon & the most expensive alternate option from the local auto store is $42. And the most egregious part of all? The belt that they suggested to replace with a stupidly overpriced new one IS PERFECTLY FINE! The felt texture on the belt is still in great shape. I had to hunt to find 1 crack of note. The splayed open sections around pulleys don't differ at all from the pic I've included.
