They replaced the alternator but never checked the alternator drive gear.Started the car and it failed in their parking lot. Her 400 alternator replacement turned into 1000 dollar replacement. I wouldn't trust them to repair a flat tire. The manager gave her a song and dance that she didn't pay the 100 diagnostic charge that the drive gear wasn't covered. So a code check is going to tell you about a bad drive gear? My opinion is they just forgot to check the drive gear or tighten a bolt and she payed the price but never again with them. Since the owner decided to chime in thought I would do an update. A simple seach for alternator replacement for a 2007 Volvo XC-90 states that the drive gear needs to be checked when replacing the alternator and his mechanic missed it and double billed the customer for his mistake. Called passing the buck. The owner actually using the customer's name in his reply screams of unprofessionalism. The pulley that was replaced was taken to the Volvo dealership in maplewood and inspected by both the parts department and a Volvo mechanic. They determined that there was nothing wrong with the pulley. They stated that the very rarely sell the pulley but the bolt that holds it on is purchased frequently. Seems she probably didn't need an alternator or pulley but a bolt replaced witch wasn't. Hopefully they enjoy their 1000 dollars of ill gotten gain.

EDITED AT THE BOTTOM. 'customer would like an alternator installed in their vehicle, customer declined any diagnostics, friend diagnosed it for free'. This exact sentence is written on your receipt. We understand we charge for diagnostics and your friend doesn't, but we urged you not to take the chance, but you did. The pulley that failed was not part of the alternator but part of the engine drive system that in turn, drives the alternator. But don't forget, when you came back after driving a short distance and your vehicle failed, you came back and had us diagnose your vehicle this time. We also discounted the price by $100 and also sent one of my guys out to Volvo in horrible weather to get your part. we also gave you the worn gear/pulley so you now have the bad part in you possession. So with all of this said, sometimes trying to save money will cost you more. So you should be giving yourself the one star for your short sidedness, not the shop you had do the work. And also, Sarah Frischknecht, I give you, as a customer, a one star review. For all future customers at my shop or any other shop, I speak for ALL auto repair shops, if you have your vehicle diagnosed from your friend, from your local auto parts store or the internet just to save the diagnostic charge at a legitimate repair shop you are risking this exact situation. We spend years and years and thousands of dollars on tools and equipment to correctly diagnose you vehicle. That's why we charge a fee. We see this happen a lot, and if you, as a customer, is willing to chance it, then don't take it out on the shop for doing EXACTLY what you asked for. I would add, 80% of customers self diagnosis is correct.. SO LETS CLEAR THINGS UP..... the manager who "gave the song and dance" was the owner, the person you talked to on the phone and at the counter was the owner, the tech that ultimately diagnosed the vehicle when it came back was the owner. So lets move along to how the $99 Diagnostic fee works. I grabbed my $10,000 scanner and checked for codes, nothing there. so then I grabbed my $300 multi-meter and checked your battery for charging volts (14.2 volts present) so then I did a load test using the vehicles loads, voltage dropped to 12.5 with headlights on, heater blowing, wipers going etc.... so I went straight to the alternator with my $300 power probe, all test were good, then I went back to my scanner and check for ECM command to the alternator, command was there. then I grabbed my trusty $1000 camera and visually looked at the alternator and drive system (because the alternator is located under the intake), all looked good. I must admit I was a bit stumped at this moment, so then I gabbed my trusty $400 timing light and put a mark on the belt and ran the engine, all seemed fine until I again put a load on the system, turns out the alternators RPM was slowing down and no longer matched the engines RPMs. So I went ahead and removed the Intake Manifold and check the clutch gear on the alternator, seemed fine. so now back to this crazy gear thingy that brought us all here today. I explained this gear to you at my counter when I handed to you. here's how this gear and shaft works. this gear is a Friction Gear, this means the gear and shaft have a slightly tapered male and female mating surface, typically the manufacture uses diamond dust to prevent this gear from doing what it did, slipping. (not sure if this particular dust is what Volvo uses). so I then removed the Gear and noticed it had marks on it consistent with the pulley slipping on the shaft. so you ask, why didn't we inspect the Gear from the beginning, well we did, its called a visual inspection, we are not going to start removing all sorts of unnecessary parts from your car to be sure they are functioning correctly. did the gear look fine, yes, was the gear loose, no. did it appear to be fastened Correctly to the shaft, yes. so there is your $99 Diagnostics that I gave you for free.

Super helpful and they didn't nickel and dime me to check a few things out even though they would have been justified in doing so.

I'm quite grateful for the professionals at Central Auto. I was able to get my vehicle checked out quickly, and repaired after taking a curb too tight, wondering if I had damaged anything. They were kind and efficient, repairing things quickly for me. I would very much recommend Central Auto in Stillwater! - Thanks again!

I’ll start by saying Dave was nice and had great customer service skills. I was quoted $38 for an oil change over the phone which is why I went here over TGK. My total for an oil change was actually $61. A week prior to this, someone I know got the same thing for $38, prompting me to take my business here and not with TGK. The timing is a little too convenient, and seems very sketchy. Don’t offer a price on the phone and charge something else, then blame it on the computer or the person behind the counter who read it wrong. That’s on you to cover the difference of the mistake, not me. Posting a review so someone else doesn’t get ripped off like I was.

Yes, we admitted to you there must have been a break down in our communication with you, noting the price difference between full synthetic and Synthetic Blend oil change. I did apologized for the confusion and did not point blame towards you or the service tech for the miss-understanding, what I did offer to you is to be sure to give you a discount on your next service to make up for this unfortunate situation, but as I see you chose a one star review instead. we are not sketchy, we don't 'switch and Bait' and we don't rip people off, But what I do see is how you handle a simple $30 mistake that we were willing to make up for. As I see with your many one star reviews about many locally owed and operated businesses it doesn't take much.

Great people and great service. I brought my car there to have the timing components replaced. They were honest and upfront with me the whole time. The only reason I did not give 5 stars is that they take their time informing you of delays. Overall, I would recommend this place to any of my friends.
