If I could give zero stars, I would. Anson Beckman was our property manager for 303 Grove Street in downtown Charleston. Although there were several annoying instances of her never responding to us via email throughout our residence there, I'll stick to the straw that broke the camel's back. We notified Anson that there was mold that we believed to be dangerous in our home in January 2018. We had tried cleaning it, but it kept coming back and we were continuously getting sicker. We requested that they come test our home. Anson came by, took a few quick looks around, and said to clean with bleach and water and that the landlord would come take a look. No official testing was done until we called the city a month after the initial request. We had to follow up every day just to get her to do anything - and when we told her we wouldn't be paying rent for March rent because of the severity of the mold, she said "no you are wrong and if you leave the lease Owen (the landlord) will come after you." Once we notified her that we had reported it to the city, that's when she called ServPro. Ultimately, they deemed the home unlivable. Anson's negligence and skirting around the issue for a month was causing great damage to our health. (Rashes, upper-respiratory issues, allergy attacks). If she had just done her job the first time we wouldn't have had to live in an "unlivable" environment for so long. To top it all off, we requested our February rent back (we had asked for inspections in January and wouldn't have paid February rent had we known the results of the tests). She agreed that we could get rent back. When we followed up, she pretended like WE were the crazy ones and denied that she ever said that. Be careful who you rent with. It cost us thousands of dollars in replacing furniture, moving costs, and medical bills - and we will likely never see a dime of that back. (Note: The photo of my arm on the left is while living in the home, the right is only a week later after moving out of the infested home.)
Michele Basler is amazing! You will not find another Realtor/ Property Manager who will go above and beyond like Michele.
An Exceptional Company, with a long track record of success in selling / buying of residential and commercial properties. AgentOwned takes a great deal of time in offering training for their agents.
I rented an apartment from Ute Appleby and Anson Beckman at the Mount Pleasant Office. It was undoubtedly one of the most unprofessional and frustrating experiences I have ever had. The house was disgusting when we moved in. Ute had “professional cleaners” come and clean the house and they pretty much did nothing. We ended up cleaning out the house for two days before we could move in. During the cleaning we found a nest of 5 dead birds in a bedroom closet, they had been there for a while. There were also no smoke detectors and the fire extinguisher they provided had been out of date for two years. During our time in the house, we would receive invoices for unwarranted charges, when we would contact the office they would have no idea what we were talking about. There were animals living in the roof, when we informed Ute of this health hazard she responded with “I said no pets” and did not have the animals removed. Once we decided to not renew our lease Ute would send perspective tenants to the house with no notice. When we moved out were told we would only be charged for a set of blinds that had been broken. When we received our security deposit (two months later), they charged us for smoke detectors we purchased and left behind out of courtesy to the next unlucky tenants, oven repairs for the old and unmaintained oven and trash removal for trash left over from the new tenants move in. We left the apartment in great shape, better then when we got it, and we were offended by how rudely this company treated us. When we contacted Anson and Ute about the security deposit deductions, Ute explicitly and blatantly lied to our faces and refused to refund the charges. I would NEVER under any circumstance rent an apartment from this company or Ute and Anson. I understand that finding an apartment in downtown Charleston is difficult, however it is not worth working with this company. I have heard similar stories form other students and would highly recommend searching for another Agency to rent from.
I rented a property from the office in Mt Pleasant from Ute Appleby and Anson Beckman. The entire experience was a complete nightmare. A month after we rented the house (and had signed a year lease) they informed us that the owner's circumstances "had changed" and that they needed to sell the house. (I later found out that the house had been on the market for the past 3 years...so they lied to us, and purposely were not up front about the status of the property when they rented it to us). Once this happened, the house was shown multiple times a week. Several times we were given absolutely no notice, and complete strangers and their real estate agents (no one I had ever met) would show up at our door out of the blue to see the house. It was incredibly inconvenient, rude, and was a huge disruption to our lives and privacy. Later on I was charged move-in fees that I had already paid, with them claiming that they had no receipt of me paying them. They also charged us for an oven repair which had broken due to years of poor maintenance and not being cleaned by previous tenants (downtown charleston house full of CofC students in and out...if you've rented downtown you know how this is). When the house sold, we moved out sooner rather than later, and made sure the house was spotless when we left. After two weeks of waiting for them to return my security deposit to me, I was informed that because of some error they had given the security deposit to the new owner of the house, and that I would have to contact him to get my security deposit refunded. Overall, the entire process has just been completely unprofessional, unethical, and at several points, an illegal violation of landlord-tenant laws. I would not recommend renting from this company whatsoever, especially since I have heard others in the Charleston community saying that they also were completely hassled dealing with this company and that they never kept on top of things. If you do rent from them, make sure to get everything in writing, ask about the owners and the owner's plans for the house specifically, and just try to be really proactive about protecting your rights. (Of course you should do this anyway but this is a company that is NOT to be trusted.)
